ギニアで作られたヴィンテージの木製スツール。
深く削り込まれた座面と、短く太い4本脚が生む重心の低いフォルムは、家具というよりひとつの彫刻のような存在感を持つ一点ものです。

装飾をほとんど持たず、木の量感と削り出された形だけで成立する佇まい。

厚みのある座面と、斜めに切り込むように削り出された輪郭。手仕事ならではの大胆な造形が、見る角度によって異なる表情を生みます。長い時間を経た木肌には濃淡や擦れが残り、新しい家具にはない静かな強さがあります。

WOUETがこの作品に惹かれたのは、民族的な装飾ではなく、削ぎ落とされたFormそのものの美しさです。

床に直接置くだけでも十分に存在感があり、白い壁、モルタル、石、ステンレス、黒い家具など、現代的で無機質な素材と合わせることで、古い木の質感がより鮮明に浮かび上がります。

ソファ脇やローテーブルのそば、玄関、廊下の余白、ベッドルームの一角など、あえて何も載せずに低いオブジェとして見せるスタイリングがおすすめです。

アフリカマスクや抽象彫刻と合わせる場合も、周囲に余白を残すことで、このスツールの丸みと力強い脚の造形がより際立ちます。

また、深く窪んだ座面に小さなクッションやブランケットを添えて、猫が丸くなって過ごす。
そんな使い方もできたりするかな、、など想像します。

ギニアには複数の民族による木工文化があり、本品の制作民族を確定できる資料は残されていません。ただし、低く構えた4本脚と厚みのある凹型座面には、ギニアのバガ族に見られる木製スツールと共通する造形も確認できます。

プリミティブでありながら、過度に民族的ではない。

だからこそ、アフリカンインテリアだけでなく、ミニマル、モダン、インダストリアルな空間にも自然に馴染みます。

A vintage wooden stool from Guinea, defined by its deeply carved seat and short, substantial four-legged form.

With its low center of gravity and solid silhouette, the piece feels less like conventional furniture and more like a small sculpture — a one-of-a-kind African object with a strong yet quiet presence.

Its beauty lies in what has been left out.

There is almost no decoration. Instead, the volume of the wood, the irregular hand-carved contours, and the marks left by years of use become the visual language of the piece.

The substantial seat is carved on an angle, giving the outer edge a bold, sloping profile. This hand-shaped form changes subtly depending on the viewing angle, while the aged surface carries tonal variation and wear that cannot be reproduced in newly made furniture.

What drew WOUET to this work was not ornament, but the strength of its form itself.

Placed directly on the floor, it holds its own as a sculptural object. Against white walls, concrete, stone, stainless steel, or black furniture, the aged wood creates a striking contrast and brings warmth and depth to a minimal interior.

We recommend placing it beside a sofa, near a low table, in an entrance hall, along a hallway, or in a quiet corner of a bedroom. Leaving the surface empty allows the silhouette and proportions of the stool to become the focus.

It also pairs beautifully with African masks and abstract sculpture, especially when surrounded by generous negative space.

Its deeply concave seat also allows for a more unexpected use: with a small cushion or folded blanket, it can become a comfortable resting spot for a cat or small dog. Rather than fixing the piece to a single purpose, we like the idea of allowing it to shift naturally between object, furniture, and part of everyday living.

Guinea is home to a wide range of woodworking traditions, and the specific ethnic attribution of this piece cannot be confirmed. However, its low four-legged construction and substantial concave seat share visual characteristics with traditional wooden stools associated with the Baga people of Guinea.

Primitive yet restrained, the piece works naturally not only within African-inspired interiors, but also in modern, minimal, and industrial spaces.

The irregularities of the hand-carved form and the patina developed over time are part of what make this piece unique.
