丸く張り出した耳、深く落ち込むふたつの目、顔の中央をまっすぐ走る長い鼻筋。
棚やコンソールに飾ると、そこに「仮面」ではなく、黒い線と面でできた静かな彫刻が現れます。マリ共和国・ドゴン族による、黒猿をモチーフにしたデゲの木彫仮面です。

この個体に惹かれるのは、猿の姿を極端に単純化した造形です。大きな耳と細長い顔、低い位置にある小さな口元だけで、どこかユーモラスでありながら、抽象彫刻のような強い輪郭が生まれています。少し離れて眺めると黒いかたまりとして空間を引き締め、近づくと削り跡や木肌の揺らぎが見えてきます。

壁にかければ、空間になじみながらも、ふと視線を引き戻す存在に。ほかのものを並べすぎず、少し余白を残して飾ると、この長い顔と左右に広がる耳のバランスがいっそう際立ちます。

デゲは、ドゴンの仮面文化において黒猿を表す仮面です。
猿らしい表情を写実的に再現するのではなく、長い鼻筋、張り出した耳、深い目のくぼみといった要素へ置き換えることで、動物の気配と人の顔のような静けさを同居させています。

表面には擦れ、小傷、木肌の濃淡、手彫りによる不均一さが見られます。均一に仕上げられた新品にはない、黒の奥行きと素材の表情としてお楽しみください。飾る際は、転倒しないよう安定した場所を選び、必要に応じてオブジェスタンドなどをご使用ください。

直射日光や過度な湿度変化は避け、乾いた布で軽く清拭する程度のメンテナンスで十分です。経年変化による色味の深まりも、天然素材ならではの魅力です。


Rounded ears project from either side, deep-set eyes recede into shadow, and a long nose runs straight down the centre of the face.
Placed on a shelf or console, it reads less as a mask and more as a quiet sculpture made of black lines and planes. A hand-carved Dogon Dege mask from Mali, depicting a black monkey.

What makes this piece compelling is its radically simplified interpretation of the monkey. The broad ears, elongated face, and small low-set mouth create a form that feels both playful and strikingly abstract. From a distance, it anchors a room as a dark, sculptural mass; up close, the carved marks and variations in the wood come into view.

Against white walls, stone, steel, or glass, its deep brown-black surface brings a crisp outline to the space. Paired with wood furniture or old books, it settles in naturally while continuing to draw the eye back. Give it a little room around it to let the balance between the long face and projecting ears stand out.

Dege is a Dogon mask representing a black monkey. Rather than depicting the animal realistically, it distils its presence into key features: the long central ridge, projecting ears, and deeply recessed eyes. The result holds both an animal-like energy and the quiet stillness of a human face.

Surface wear, small scratches, tonal variation, and irregular hand-carved marks are part of the piece’s character. Display it in a stable location and use an object stand if needed.
