A quiet white face emerging from a dark sculptural volume.

This wooden mask is attributed to the Kwele peoples of Central Africa. Its restrained palette of black, red, and white is paired with a deeply hollowed, helmet-like form—giving the work a presence far beyond a conventional wall decoration.

The heart-shaped white face, curved brows, narrow eyes, and sharply triangular nose create a serene expression from the front. From the side, the thick black form and red band reveal a far more architectural silhouette: a compact, powerful object that draws the eye and holds a wall.

The Kwele live across the forest borderlands of northeastern Gabon, northern Republic of the Congo, and southeastern Cameroon. White kaolin faces and abstract heart-shaped features are closely associated with Kwele mask traditions. This example stands out for its sculptural depth and the balance between its soft facial plane and bold outer form.

Wear to the pigment, small losses, marks, and the aged surface are part of this individual work’s character. No two masks carry the same expression, color, or history. Once sold, this exact piece will not return.

The precise place of manufacture, date, specific mask type, and ritual-use history are unverified. Please review all photographs for condition.
