A face reduced to two eyes and a single ridge.
This carved wooden mask is defined by its elongated oval form and the bold central axis that rises through its full length. Against the dark brown-black surface, two long pale, earth-toned panels frame narrow eyes. With almost no mouth or brows, the mask creates its expression through a minimum of elements and an unmistakable gaze.
From the front, it appears graphic and tightly composed around one vertical line. From the side, the central ridge projects dramatically outward, while the reverse reveals its substantial depth and volume. More than a flat wall piece, it reads as a compact sculpture with presence from every angle.
Its radical abstraction recalls certain Kwele “six-eyed masks” from the region spanning northeastern Gabon and northwestern Republic of the Congo. In celebrated Kwele examples, a central projection and multiple eyes assemble a human face as a symbolic structure. This work does not reproduce the six eyes or the conventional silhouette, but it suggests a simplified and freely transformed interpretation of that visual language.
Its appeal lies precisely in the fact that it does not fit neatly into a familiar type.
It is not a direct copy of a Kwele six-eyed mask. Yet the central axis, the placement of the eyes, and the reduction of the face into a sign all retain a related sensibility. Because it resists an immediate label, it remains in the mind first as a powerful form.
Seen head-on, two eyes stare outward. Seen from an angle, the large central ridge takes over. It can appear as a face, a fragment of architecture, or an abstract sculpture depending on where you stand. That quality makes it an object that continues to reveal itself over time.
The grain of the dark wood, worn pale pigment, and deeply cut eye openings give the piece its quiet tension. On a white wall, its silhouette becomes especially clear; among grey, black, metal, or aged wood, it creates a point of focus without overwhelming the room. A piece to live with as an abstract sculpture rather than simply as decoration.
Presented as a relatively recent decorative carved wooden mask whose abstract form evokes Kwele six-eyed masks. Its precise place of manufacture, maker, cultural attribution, and date remain unknown.
The metal hanging ring was added later by the seller from whom it was purchased.
Wear to the wood, variation and loss in pigment, and irregularities in carving are part of this individual piece’s character.
