エチオピアのアンティークギャラリーで、ひと目で惹かれた手彫りの台付き木製ボウルです。浅く大きく開く碗部と、裾へ向かってゆるやかに広がる台座。その軽やかな上部と、地面をつかむような重心の対比に惹かれ、オーナーから譲っていただきました。

器でありながら、小さな家具や彫刻のようにも見える佇まい。コンソールやダイニングテーブルに置くだけで、空間に低い重心と静かな高さのリズムが生まれます。

鍵や毎日身につけるもの、ドライオブジェをまとめる器としてはもちろん、あえて何も入れずに飾るのもおすすめです。何も入れないときこそ、薄く広がる碗部と、厚みのある台座のバランスがよく見えてきます。

手彫りによるわずかな起伏や、擦れ、小傷、色の濃淡が残る木肌。光の向きによって黒、焦茶、赤みを含んだ表情が少しずつ現れます。正面からは端正に、斜めからは碗部の薄さと台座の厚みが際立つ、見る角度によって印象を変える一点です。

少し価格の張る一点ですが、量産品にはない木肌の深みと、手彫りによる伸びやかな輪郭があります。器として使わない時間にも、そこにあるだけで空間を整えてくれる彫刻のような存在。実用性だけでは測れない、この個体が持つ佇まいに価値を感じていただける方に選んでいただきたい一点です。

エチオピアで買い付けた木製器ですが、制作地・民族・本来の用途は確認できていません。特定の民族や儀礼用途と結びつけることはせず、素材の量感と手仕事から生まれた形そのものを楽しむためのオブジェとしてご紹介します。

食品用としての安全性は確認できていないため、直接食品を入れる用途はおすすめしていません。収納とディスプレイを兼ねる器として、暮らしの中でお楽しみください。

お手入れは、柔らかい乾いた布で埃をやさしく払ってください。水拭き、洗剤、直射日光、高温多湿は避けてください。

A hand-carved wooden pedestal bowl sourced in Ethiopia. Its wide, shallow bowl and gently flared base flow into one continuous form, making it feel as much like a small piece of furniture as a vessel. Placed on a console or dining table, it brings a grounded presence and a quiet sense of rhythm to the room.

Use it to hold keys, jewellery, or dried botanical objects, or leave it empty to let its distinctive silhouette speak for itself. Against a pale surface, stone, glass, or stainless steel, the depth of the wood and the sculptural form stand out beautifully.

What makes this piece special is the contrast between its thin, gently curved rim and the broad, grounded base beneath it. The upper form feels light and open, while the lower section sits with reassuring weight. Together, they give the piece a sculptural presence that goes beyond its function as a vessel.

Subtle hand-carved undulations, marks from age, and tonal variations remain across the surface. Depending on the light, shades of black, deep brown, and warm reddish wood emerge gradually. Seen from the front, it feels composed and quiet; from an angle, the thinness of the bowl and the depth of the base become more apparent.

Although this wooden vessel was sourced in Ethiopia, its exact place of production, ethnic origin, and original use have not been confirmed. Rather than linking it to a specific group or ceremonial purpose, we present it as an object to appreciate for its material presence and the form shaped by hand.

As its suitability for food use has not been confirmed, we do not recommend placing food directly inside. Enjoy it as a vessel for small belongings and display, or as a wooden object that adds form and depth to an interior.

Scuffs, small marks, grain variation, and tonal irregularities are present across the surface. These are part of the individual character created by handwork and time. Dust gently with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid water, cleaning products, direct sunlight, and hot or humid environments.

Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, as natural wood may gradually change in color.
The surface has been finished with a natural protective coating to help preserve the wood while maintaining its authentic appearance.
Because only minimal finishing has been applied, the color may gradually soften with friction or exposure to moisture. No artificial color seal has been used, allowing the wood to age naturally over time.
