モロッコで手彫りされた、ソープストーン製の三猿彫刻。目、耳、口を覆う三体の猿を、黒灰色と茶色が溶け合う石から削り出した小さなオブジェです。白い棚やステンレスのキャビネットに置くだけで、すっきりした空間に、思わず目を留めたくなる小さな物語が生まれます。

三体の猿はそれぞれ違う仕草をしているのに、正面から見ると、重なった手と顔がひとつの塊のように見えます。丸い背中、手の動き、少し曖昧な表情。可愛らしさだけに寄らず、石の重みと静けさが残るところが、この作品の魅力です。

棚の端に少し余白をつくって飾ると、三つの手と顔のリズムがよく見えてきます。ガラスや金属のそばでは、石肌に含まれる茶色が空間をやわらげ、古書や木の家具と合わせると、自然になじみながらも印象に残ります。小さな花器やオブジェを集めた棚の中に加えてもよいですが、単体で置くと、この彫刻が持つユーモアと輪郭がより際立ちます。

目、耳、口を覆う三猿の仕草は、日本では「見ざる・聞かざる・言わざる」として知られ、現在は Three Wise Monkeys として世界でも広く親しまれています。慎みや自制を思わせる一方で、見る人や場所によって受け取られ方が変わる、余白のあるモチーフです。

この作品について、モロッコ固有の意味は伝わっていません。だからこそ、決まった物語に閉じず、三つの身振りがつくる可笑しさや、石から浮かび上がる顔と手の重なりを、そのまま楽しんでいただけます。

黒、灰、茶がゆるやかに混じる石肌には、手彫りの跡や石目、小さな起伏が残されています。光の向きによって表情が変わり、正面ではグラフィックのように、斜めからは石の厚みを持つ小さな彫刻として見えてきます。整いすぎない形に惹かれる方へ、長くそばに置いていただきたい一点です。

A hand-carved three-monkey sculpture made from soapstone in Morocco. Three small figures cover their eyes, ears, and mouth, carved from stone with softly shifting tones of charcoal grey and brown. Placed on a white shelf or steel cabinet, it adds a small detail that makes an otherwise ordered space feel more personal.

Each monkey holds a different gesture, yet from the front their hands and faces merge into one compact form. The rounded backs, quiet expressions, and weight of the stone keep the piece from feeling merely decorative. It is playful, but never overly sweet.

Give it a little space on the edge of a shelf and the rhythm of the three figures becomes clear. Beside glass or metal, the warm brown tones in the stone soften the room. With books or wood, it settles in naturally while still drawing the eye back. It can sit among other small objects, but displayed on its own, the humour and silhouette of the carving become more apparent.

In Japan, the three gestures are known as “see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil.” The motif is now widely recognised as the Three Wise Monkeys, with meanings that can shift depending on the place and the viewer.

No Morocco-specific meaning has been passed down with this piece. That leaves room to appreciate it simply for what it is: three gestures, held together in stone, with an unexpected balance of humour and stillness.

Natural veining, tonal variation, and hand-carved irregularities are part of its character. Handle with care, avoid strong impacts, and wipe gently with a soft, dry cloth.
