マリ共和国・ドゴン族のワル（Walu）アンテロープ仮面。
高さ48cmの細長い角が、壁面や棚に鋭い縦のラインをつくる木彫マスクです。黒褐色の木肌、幾何学的な刻線、深い顔のくぼみまで、実際に顔へ着けるために生まれた形がそのまま残っています。

何もない壁に掛ければ、空間に一本の強い輪郭が生まれます。棚やキャビネットに置けば、角の高さと顔の黒さが周囲の物を静かに引き立て、部屋全体の視線を上へ導きます。白い壁、石、ガラス、ステンレス、黒い家具など、硬質で直線的な素材と特に好相性です。

この個体で惹かれるのは、アンテロープを説明的に彫るのではなく、角・目・鼻だけを極端に抽象化しているところです。中央で尖る額から一本の長い鼻へ落ちる線、三角形の覗き穴、顔の周囲を走る刻線。正面ではグラフィックのように見え、横からは木の厚みと彫りの深さが現れます。

ワルは、ドゴンの仮面文化に登場するアンテロープを表す仮面です。本品の裏面にも、顔を受ける深いくぼみ、覗き穴、頭部に固定するための紐穴が残されており、着用式の仮面であったことが分かります。本来は衣装や動きとともに現れるものでしたが、現在はその背景を尊重しながら、木の輪郭と時間の表情を楽しむオブジェとして紹介します。

木部には擦れ、色の濃淡、角や縁の木地の露出、小さな欠けや穴、古い紐の残りが見られます。均一で完璧な状態ではありません。けれど、それらが黒い木肌に奥行きを与え、顔に着けられ、扱われてきたものだけが持つ緊張感をつくっています。整いすぎたオブジェより、形と素材に残る時間に惹かれる方へ。

サイズは約 幅17cm × 奥行11cm × 高さ48cm。細身で奥行きを抑えた造形のため、壁際や棚の限られたスペースにも取り入れやすい一点です。実際の着用はおすすめしません。壁掛けの際は、残っている古い紐に荷重をかけず、作品の重量と形状に適した金具または専用のディスプレイ台をご使用ください。

お手入れは、柔らかい乾いた布で軽く埃を払ってください。直射日光、高温多湿、過度な乾燥を避けて保管してください。

直射日光や過度な湿度変化は避け、乾いた布で軽く清拭する程度のメンテナンスで十分です。経年変化による色味の深まりも、天然素材ならではの魅力です。


A Walu antelope mask of the Dogon people of Mali.

At 48 cm high, its two long horns introduce a sharp vertical line to a wall, shelf, or cabinet. The dark brown wood, incised geometric lines, deeply hollowed reverse, and viewing holes preserve the structure of an object made to be worn over the face.

Displayed against an empty wall, it creates a strong, graphic silhouette. On a shelf or sideboard, the height of the horns and the deep tone of the wood draw the eye upward and give surrounding objects a clearer presence. It pairs especially well with stone, glass, steel, black furniture, and light-coloured walls.

What makes this particular mask compelling is its extreme reduction of the antelope form. Rather than describing an animal in detail, it focuses on the essentials: horns, eyes, and a long central nose. The peaked forehead, triangular openings, and incised lines create a graphic face from the front; from the side, its depth and hand-carved construction become more apparent.

Walu is an antelope mask within Dogon mask traditions. The deeply carved facial cavity, viewing holes, and cord holes on the reverse indicate that this piece was made for wear. While masks were originally completed through movement and costume, this work is presented today as an object through which to appreciate its form, material, and the passage of time.

Wear, tonal variation, exposed wood at the edges, small losses, holes, and remnants of old cord are visible. This is not a pristine object. These traces give the surface its depth and make the mask especially suited to those drawn to forms that retain their history rather than conceal it.

Approximate size: W17 × D11 × H48 cm. Its narrow width and modest depth make it easy to introduce to a wall-side shelf or a limited display area. It is not recommended for present-day wear. When displaying it on a wall, do not rely on the remaining old cord; use suitable hardware or a purpose-made display stand.

Dust gently with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid direct sunlight, excessive humidity, and extreme dryness.
