壁に掛けるだけで、空間に鋭い動物の気配と静かな緊張感をつくる木彫仮面です。
マリのバマナ族に伝わるハイエナ仮面、スルク（Suruku）を思わせる一点。
長い鼻先、大きく張り出した耳、黒褐色の木肌に残る点描が、白壁や無機質な棚に強い輪郭を生みます。

細長い顔の先へ、上下に分かれた顎が伸びる大胆な横顔。正面では人の顔のようにも見え、角度を変えるとハイエナの頭部として現れる、この曖昧さが魅力です。
小さな目穴、耳の丸み、鼻先の鋭さまでを削り出したプロポーションは、他のオブジェと並べても埋もれず、一点で棚や壁面の視線を集めます。

玄関の壁、キャビネットの上、書棚の余白など、平面的な場所に立体感を加えたいときにおすすめです。木、石、鉄、ガラスなど幅広い素材と合わせられますが、余白のある白壁に単体で掛けると、彫刻としてのシルエットが最も際立ちます。

スルクは、マリのバマナ族のコレ結社で用いられたハイエナ仮面として知られています。
長い顎と大きな耳はハイエナを示す特徴とされ、本品にもその動物的な構成が見られます。
一方で、制作年代・民族帰属・本来の用途・実際に儀礼で用いられた経歴は確認できていません。

表面に残る赤、黄、白の点描は、ハイエナの斑点状の毛並みを思わせる装飾です。
固有の意味は特定できませんが、黒褐色の木肌に細かなリズムを加え、動物としての表情を際立たせています。

背面の穴を使って壁に掛けられます。
重量に合ったフックまたはビスを壁の素材に応じてご用意いただき、落下しないようしっかり固定してください。
壁面に取り入れやすいコンパクトさでありながら、横から見たときの長い鼻先と奥行きが、平面作品にはない陰影を生みます。

表面には擦れ、小傷、木肌の濃淡、表面の付着物や色の抜けが見られます。頭部から額にかけては、過去に割れを修復した跡があります。また、鼻先や縁などにも欠けや摩耗が残ります。

完全な状態ではありませんが、長い鼻先や耳、点描の表情を損なうものではありません。むしろ、重ねられた補修や削れた木肌が、この仮面の動物的な造形に時間の層を加えています。整いすぎた新しい木彫にはない、荒々しく深い表情を持つ一点としてお楽しみください。

お手入れは、柔らかい乾いた布で、表面の埃をやさしく払ってください。
水拭き、洗剤、強い摩擦、直射日光、高温多湿は避けてください。

動物を直接的に飾るのではなく、抽象的で強い造形としてインテリアに取り入れたい方。

A carved wooden mask evoking the Suruku, or hyena masks associated with the Bamana people of Mali.

Its long snout, rounded projecting ears, dark brown surface, and scattered traces of red, yellow, and white pigment create an arresting silhouette on a wall. Hung on its own, it brings depth and a focused animal presence to an entryway, shelf wall, or cabinet area.

The mask shifts between human and animal form. From the front, its small eye openings and elongated face feel almost abstract; from the side, the projecting upper and lower jaws reveal the distinctive profile of a hyena. The scattered painted dots may recall a hyena’s spotted coat, though their specific meaning has not been identified.

Suruku masks are known as hyena masks associated with the Bamana Korè society. This piece evokes that form, but its precise date, ethnic attribution, original purpose, and history of ritual use are unconfirmed. It is offered as a carved decorative object with a culturally resonant form.

Surface wear, minor scratches, tonal variation, residue, and pigment loss are present. There is also an old repair running from the top of the head toward the forehead, along with chips and wear around the snout and edges.

The piece is not in perfect condition, but these traces do not diminish its striking elongated snout, ears, or painted details. Instead, the repair and worn surface add a sense of accumulated time to its animal form, giving it a raw depth that a newly carved object cannot replicate.

Wall-mountable from the reverse. Please use a secure hook or screw suitable for the wall material and the object’s weight. Wipe gently with a soft, dry cloth and avoid water, cleaning products, direct sunlight, and humidity.
