A carved wooden Nimba sculpture based on the distinctive form associated with the Baga peoples of Guinea. Its strongly modelled head, calm forward-facing expression, full torso, and four supporting legs transform a shelf or sideboard into a small display space.

The first thing that draws the eye is the face. Restrained eyes, a projecting nose, and a firm chin create an expression that feels both composed and quietly powerful. Rather than simply blending into an interior, this is a figure that gives the room a sense of presence.

From the front, the full chest and four legs create a stable, balanced structure. From the side, the volume of the head, elongated neck, and bold line running through the torso and legs become more apparent. Its reduced form pairs naturally with stone, black ceramics, metal, and glass.

The surface retains variations in tone, rubbing, fine carving marks, and subtle irregularities from handwork. Incised details across the cheeks and sides of the head, together with the carving at the back, give this individual work its depth. Display it on its own with a little space around it, against a white wall or on a dark cabinet, to let the silhouette fully register.

Nimba, also known as D’mba, is associated with ideals of mature womanhood, motherhood, cultivation, and the wellbeing of the community in Baga culture. The full breasts, four legs, and strongly modelled head are defining features of the form.

Large Nimba shoulder masks are held in the collections of The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Smithsonian National Museum of African Art. Historically, they were carried on the shoulders of male dancers and performed with cloth and raffia costume elements. This work brings that distinctive sculptural structure into a smaller form for the interior.
