ギニア出身の販売者から買い付けた木彫作品です。制作地・民族・本来の用途は特定できませんでしたが、造形そのものに強く惹かれ、どうしてもご紹介したかった一点です。

片膝を立て、腰を落とし、腕を大きく折り返す姿勢。丸みのある頭部から、細く長い腕、低く伸びる脚へと続く輪郭には、動きの途中を切り取ったような力があります。

この作品に惹かれたのは、人物像でありながら、表情や細部を語りすぎないところです。顔の彫り込みを抑え、腕と脚の間に大きな余白をつくることで、見る角度によって印象が変わります。正面では張りつめた輪郭が際立ち、横から見ると、身体の曲線と抜けのある構造がよりはっきりと現れます。

黒やグレーの壁際、石のオブジェ、陶器、写真集などと合わせると、深い褐色の木肌が空間を引き締めます。小さな棚の端やキャビネットの上など、周囲に少し余白を残して単体で飾るのがおすすめです。

表面には木肌の擦れや色の濃淡、手彫りならではの彫りむらが見られます。底面には仕上げの粗さが残りますが、壁際や棚上に飾る際には目立ちません。ご購入前に画像で状態をご確認ください。

A carved wooden figure that brings a quiet sense of human presence and tension to a shelf or sideboard. More than a decorative object, it reads like a small sculpture within the interior.

This work was acquired from a Guinean seller. While its place of production, cultural group, and original purpose could not be identified, we were strongly drawn to its form and wanted to introduce it.

The figure sits low with one knee raised, its arms folded in a broad, angular gesture. A rounded head leads into elongated arms and low-set legs, creating a silhouette that feels as though it captures a movement in progress.

What drew us to this piece is its restraint. It is a human figure, yet it does not rely on detailed facial features or elaborate surface decoration. The large open spaces created between the arms and legs allow its character to shift with the viewing angle. From the front, its taut outline feels almost architectural; from the side, the curves of the body and its open structure become more apparent.

Placed against a black or grey wall, or alongside stone objects, ceramics, and art books, the deep brown wood brings definition and warmth to the space. It works especially well displayed on its own at the edge of a shelf or cabinet, with a little space left around it.

The surface shows natural variations in colour, rubbing, and uneven carving marks from handwork. The underside has a rough finish, though this is not noticeable when displayed on a shelf or against a wall. Please review all photographs carefully before purchasing.

Rather than simply blending into an interior, this is a wooden figure that invites the eye to pause.
