エチオピア中南部の高原地帯に暮らすグラゲ族によって作られた、手彫りの木製ボウルです。

現地の生活に根差した道具として制作されたもので、装飾を目的とせず、
使うことを前提に生まれた形が、そのまま造形として残されています。

素材には在来の硬質木材が用いられ、一本の木をくり抜く伝統的な手仕事によって成形されています。
表面にはノミで削り進めた跡が綺麗に残されており、過度に整えられることなく、
人の手の動きや力加減がそのまま表情として刻まれています。
こうしたノミ跡が、民藝らしい温かみのある佇まいを生み出しています。

浅く広がりながら自然に立ち上がるフォルムは、直線的な構成を避け、
全体が連続するように流れる有機的な形状を描いています。
木目に沿って導かれた曲線と、不均一さを受け入れた輪郭は、
彫刻的な量感を持ちながらも柔らかく、視覚的な緊張を生みません。

高台を持たない低重心の構造は、床や低い台に直接置いて使う生活様式に由来し、
機能から必然的に導き出された形です。

フルーツを無造作に盛ったり、鍵やアクセサリーなどの細々した小物をまとめる器としても
使用でき、実用性と造形性が自然に共存しています。

側面に見られる取手状の造形部分には紐を通すことができ、置いて使うだけでなく、
壁に掛けてウォールデコレーションとして楽しむことも可能です。
器としての役割を離れ、壁面に配置することで、
有機的な輪郭やノミ跡の陰影がより強調され、
彫刻的なオブジェとしての存在感が際立ちます。

内側に見られる摩耗や、外側に重ねられた色の深まりは、
人工的に施されたエイジングではありません。

同じ形を意図して作られても、木の個体差と手仕事によって一つとして同じものは存在せず、本品も一点ものとしての確かな個性を備えています。

About the Piece :
This hand-carved wooden bowl was made by the Gurage people of south-central Ethiopia, where woodworking has long been rooted in everyday life. Created as a functional household object rather than a decorative piece, its form reflects daily use and cultural habits, resulting in a quiet yet sculptural presence. The bowl is carved from a single piece of locally sourced hardwood using traditional hollowing techniques. Cleanly preserved chisel marks remain visible on the surface, recording the rhythm and pressure of the maker’s hands. These traces give the bowl a warm, folk-art character.

The gently expanding shape flows upward without sharp transitions, forming an organic, continuous silhouette. Guided by the natural grain of the wood, the curves feel soft and unforced. Its low-profile base, without a foot, originates from a lifestyle in which objects are placed directly on the ground or low surfaces. It can be used to hold fruit casually or to gather small everyday items such as keys or jewelry, allowing function and form to coexist naturally.

A handle-like carved section on the side allows a cord or string to be attached, making it possible to hang the piece on the wall as a decorative object. When displayed vertically, the organic outline and chisel marks become more pronounced, emphasizing its sculptural quality beyond its role as a vessel.

The patina visible on the interior and exterior surfaces is the result of long-term use, not artificial aging. Variations in tone, texture, and shape arise from the individuality of the wood and the hand-carving process, making each piece truly one of a kind.
