This vintage mask, presented by wouet, originates from the Grebo people, who inhabit the border region between southeastern Guinea and Liberia. Carved from a single block of wood, it represents the Grebo’s distinctive sculptural tradition, recognized for its geometric rhythm and expressive abstraction. The mask depicts a monkey, an animal that symbolizes intelligence, agility, and communal protection within Grebo cosmology.

The mask was entirely hand-carved, using adzes and chisels, as shown by the visible tool marks on its interior surface. Its smooth curvature and deep-cut eyes give the impression of movement and vitality. The dark patina, enriched by time and handling, reveals both the artistry and the age of the piece. The interior shows natural wear consistent with ritual use, attesting to its authenticity and cultural significance.
