こちらのマスクは、ギニア南東部からリベリアにかけて暮らすグレボ族（Grebo）の伝統的な造形に基づいて制作された一点ものです。
力強いフォルムと幾何学的な線刻が特徴で、猿を象った抽象的な造形として知られています。
グレボ族では、動物の姿を通して自然の力や知恵を表現する文化が古くから受け継がれており、とりわけ猿は知恵と機敏さ、共同体の守護を象徴する存在として重要な意味を持ちます。

ずっしりと重いこちらのマスクは、一本の木を丹念にくり抜いて形作られたもので、内側には手斧やノミによる削り跡が残り、熟練した職人の手仕事の痕跡が随所に見られます。
表面には黒褐色の天然染料が塗布され、時間の経過とともに艶やかな質感が生まれています。

This vintage mask, presented by wouet, originates from the Grebo people, who inhabit the border region between southeastern Guinea and Liberia. Carved from a single block of wood, it represents the Grebo’s distinctive sculptural tradition, recognized for its geometric rhythm and expressive abstraction. The mask depicts a monkey, an animal that symbolizes intelligence, agility, and communal protection within Grebo cosmology.

The mask was entirely hand-carved, using adzes and chisels, as shown by the visible tool marks on its interior surface.
