This brass sculpture was created using the traditional lost-wax casting technique passed down by the Dogon people of the Republic of Mali. Each piece is cast individually from thick brass, giving it a substantial weight when held. Its quiet yet powerful presence is characteristic of West African metalwork and brings a grounded atmosphere to any interior.

The main form represents a crocodile, on whose back stand two slender human figures. The almond-shaped heads, narrow necks and elongated limbs are signature features of Dogon figural expression, shaped with care to evoke the connection between people, nature and the land they inhabit. Fine incised patterns animate the crocodile’s surface, and the subtle irregularities from handwork add richness to the metal’s texture.
