ギニア西部の沿岸地域に暮らすバガ族（Baga）の人々によって生み出された、伝統的なニンバ像（Nimba figure）です。

ニンバとは、母なる大地と豊穣を象徴する女神の名であり、バガ族では古くから農耕と生命の循環、母性の力を象徴する最も神聖な存在として崇められてきました。

ギニア共和国は西アフリカの大西洋に面し、北はセネガルやマリ、東はコートジボワール、南はリベリアやシエラレオネと国境を接しています。
その中でも西部沿岸の湿地帯は稲作や漁業が盛んで、自然とともに生きる文化が今も息づいています。

この像は、村の祭礼で使われる肩掛け式の巨大なマスクを原型にしており、家庭の守護や豊作祈願の象徴として小型化されたものです。

顔が大きく前に突き出ているのは、力強さや存在感、女性の豊かさ、そして社会的・儀式的な威厳を表す形で、村の守護や豊穣の象徴としても意味があります。
高い鼻は美の象徴であり、理想的な女性像（健康、豊かさ、力強さ）を表し、頭のとさか状の部分は豊穣や霊的力を表す象徴です。
また、農耕や豊作に関わる儀式で、自然や精霊とのつながりを象徴するデザインでもあります。

その精神性と造形の力強さは、20世紀初頭のヨーロッパ美術にも大きな影響を与えています。

特にパブロ・ピカソは、1930年代にニンバのヘッドピースを購入し、彼の初期の彫刻作品、特にマリー＝テレーズ・ウォルターの肖像において、その影響が見られるとされています。

This is a traditional Nimba figure created by the Baga people who live along the western coastal region of Guinea.

The Nimba is the name of a goddess symbolizing Mother Earth and fertility. Among the Baga, she has long been revered as the most sacred being, representing agriculture, the cycle of life, and the power of motherhood.

The Republic of Guinea lies on the Atlantic coast of West Africa, bordering Senegal and Mali to the north, Côte d’Ivoire to the east, and Liberia and Sierra Leone to the south. In particular, the wetlands along the western coast are rich in rice cultivation and fishing, and a culture of living in harmony with nature continues to thrive there.

This figure is modeled after the large shoulder-worn masks used in village festivals and has been miniaturized as a symbol of household protection and prayers for a bountiful harvest.

The face protrudes forward, conveying strength, presence, feminine abundance, and social and ceremonial dignity, serving as a symbol of village protection and fertility. The high nose represents beauty and the ideal female form—health, abundance, and strength—while the crest-like feature on the head symbolizes fertility and spiritual power. The design also reflects connections to nature and spirits in rituals related to agriculture and harvests.

The spiritual significance and powerful form of the Nimba figure had a notable impact on early 20th-century European art. Pablo Picasso, for instance, purchased a Nimba headdress in the 1930s, and its influence is said to be evident in his early sculptural works, particularly portraits of Marie-Thérèse Walter. In this way, the Nimba figure contributed to fundamentally transforming the aesthetic values of modern art.
