カメルーン北部のドワヨ（ナムジ）族によって制作された木彫人形です。

This wooden figurine was created by the Dowayo (Namji) people of northern Cameroon.
It was produced in its time, and through long years of use, the wooden parts have worn smooth while the beads and cowrie shells have acquired a subdued, aged luster.
It stands apart from the commercial Namji dolls seen today, making it a truly unique piece.

The first thing that draws attention is the small fragments of metal used for the eyes.
Rather than uniform industrial parts, these are hand-hammered pieces of locally available brass or iron, set into the wood with a rustic simplicity. Their slight irregularity, asymmetry, and the patina of age lend a deeply authentic character.

The hands and earrings are not made of metal but of leather, another hallmark of older examples. The texture of leather cords and knots remains visible, emphasizing its grounded, handcrafted origin from materials of daily life. Over time, the leather has dried and its color has deepened, adding to its sense of history.

In contrast, contemporary Namji dolls made for the tourist and art market are often adorned with bright metal parts and perfectly arranged beadwork, giving them a polished, decorative quality. While those pieces appear vivid and uniform, this work reveals freedom in material choice and form, with evident traces of age in the wooden surfaces themselves.

The torso and base are carved from wood, partially embroidered with beads, and decorated with cowrie shells. Cowries once served as a form of currency and a symbol of trade, prosperity, and fertility. They were revered as ornaments that carried prayers for wealth and lineage.
