This unique piece, presented by wouet, is a traditional wooden key from the Dogon tribe of Mali, representing a rare example of African primitive art.

In Dogon architectural culture, keys used to secure granaries or household doors were not mere functional tools; they carried profound symbolic significance, representing life, abundance, and order.
Through the motifs carved on doors and keys, the Dogon people expressed the boundary between the visible and invisible worlds, invoking the protection of ancestors and spirits. Therefore, these keys were not simple objects—they were adorned with meaningful symbolic carvings, such as fish shapes, lizards, and zigzag patterns.
Fish and lizards symbolize water, life, and protection, while zigzag patterns represent water currents, lightning, and energy.
These motifs ensured that the key safeguarded not only the physical safety of the home or granary but also the spiritual order and abundance within.

This key is carefully carved by hand from locally sourced wood using traditional chisels and carving tools, preserving the warmth and individuality of hand craftsmanship.
