This Kifwebe mask originates from the Songye people of the south-central region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The word Kifwebe means “mask” or “spiritual being” in the Songye language. Traditionally, such masks were used by the male secret society known as Bwadi Bwa Kifwebe during rituals that sought to maintain social order and harmony within the community.

The monochrome mask presented here was created for decorative purposes and was not used in ritual practice.

Crafted from locally sourced hardwood and hand-painted with natural pigments—white kaolin clay and charcoal—its design features a rectangular, protruding mouth symbolizing the “power of speech” and the spirit of truth. Each mask is entirely hand-carved by skilled artisans, resulting in a truly one-of-a-kind piece, with no two ever identical in expression or texture.
