アフリカ中部、コンゴ民主共和国のレガ族（Lega）によって受け継がれてきたサイズが小さいパスポートマスクと呼ばれる木彫仮面です。
儀礼で使われる大型の仮面とは異なり、個人が携帯するために作られた小型のマスクで、社会の中での立場や精神的成熟を示す象徴として受け継がれてきました。

この作品の特徴であるチェック状の模様は、レガ族の思想において、白と黒、知と感情、静と動といった相反する力を意味し、どちらも人生に欠かせない要素とされています。
幾何学的に分割された顔は、人が持つ多面性と、その中で秩序を見出すことの大切さを象徴しています。
深い青は知恵と静寂、白は純粋さと内なる光を表し、全体の構成は「理性と感性の均衡」を美しく可視化しています。
中央を貫く縦の線は「自己の中心」、つまり内面の統合と精神的成熟を示すものとされます。

この静謐な造形は、20世紀初頭の美術界にも強い影響を与えました。
ピカソは《アヴィニョンの娘たち》を描く際、レガ族のマスクに見られる抽象性と精神性に触発され、モディリアーニはその長く伸びた顔と閉じた瞼の静けさを肖像画に取り入れました。

レガ族のマスクは、写実を超えて「精神を形にする芸術」として、モダンアートの源流を築いた存在でもあります。

This small wooden mask, known as a passport mask, was created by the Lega people of the Democratic Republic of the Congo in Central Africa.
Unlike the large masks used in ceremonies, it was made in a compact size to be carried by individuals, symbolizing one’s social status and spiritual maturity within the community.

The checkered pattern that characterizes this piece holds deep meaning in Lega philosophy.
It represents opposing yet complementary forces—such as light and dark, intellect and emotion, stillness and movement—each considered essential elements of life.
The geometrically divided face symbolizes the many facets of human nature and the importance of finding harmony within them.
The deep blue conveys wisdom and serenity, while the white expresses purity and inner light.
Together, the composition beautifully visualizes the balance between reason and sensibility.
The vertical line running through the center signifies the “core of the self,” a metaphor for inner unity and spiritual maturity.

This serene form had a profound influence on early 20th-century art.
Pablo Picasso drew inspiration from the abstraction and spirituality of Lega masks when painting Les Demoiselles d’Avignon, and Amedeo Modigliani incorporated their elongated faces and closed, meditative eyes into his portraits.

Beyond representation, the masks of the Lega people stand as an art of the spirit—works that gave birth to the foundations of modern art.
