アフリカ中部、コンゴ民主共和国のレガ族（Lega）によって受け継がれてきた伝統的な造形美。
「wouet（ウート）」がセレクトするこの一点は、レガ族の象徴的なパスポートマスクと呼ばれる木彫仮面です。
儀礼で使われる大型の仮面とは異なり、パスポートマスクは手のひらほどのサイズで、携帯したり、家の中に飾ったり、布袋などに入れて持ち歩かれるものでした。

マスクは、レガ族が社会組織「ブワミ（Bwami）」の中で用いてきた造形に由来します。
顔全体に塗られた白いカオリン顔料は、清廉さと知恵の象徴。
その中に浮かぶ細い目と赤みを帯びた口元は、静寂の中にある知性と感情の調和を表現しています。
なだらかに尖るハート形の輪郭は、レガ族の美的理想を示すとともに、人の内面の静けさや均衡を造形的に表しています。

現地で採取された天然木を手彫りで成形し、顔料で彩色。
木の質感を活かした柔らかな仕上げは、長年受け継がれてきた手仕事ならではの味わいを持ちます。
小型ながらも細部の彫刻が精緻で、持ち主の「個」を映すような一点ものとして仕上げられています。
年月とともに表面の風合いが深まり、落ち着いた光沢が生まれるのも魅力です。

Product Description

Traditional sculptural beauty passed down by the Lega people of the Democratic Republic of the Congo in Central Africa.
This piece, carefully selected by wouet (ウート), is a symbolic “passport mask” — a small wooden mask distinct from the larger ritual masks.
Unlike ceremonial masks worn in dances or rituals, passport masks are palm-sized objects that were carried, displayed in homes, or kept in cloth pouches as personal items.

The design originates from the forms used within the Bwami society, a key social and moral organization of the Lega people.
The white kaolin pigment covering the face symbolizes purity and wisdom.
The narrow eyes and reddish lips express a sense of balance between intellect and emotion, while the softly pointed heart-shaped outline represents the Lega aesthetic ideal and the inner calm and harmony of the human spirit.

Hand-carved from locally sourced natural wood and finished with pigments, each piece reflects the refined texture and warmth of generations of craftsmanship.
Though small in scale, the mask’s precise carving gives it a strong individuality — each one is truly one of a kind.
Over time, the surface develops a deeper tone and gentle sheen, enhancing its serene presence.
