This is a sugar-crushing tool (sugar hammer) traditionally used by the Tuareg people of
the Sahara Desert in North Africa.
The warm texture of brass and the simple, rustic form embody not only practicality but
also the refined aesthetic sensibilities of their tribal culture.

At the heart of Tuareg life is the tea ceremony.
Using this tool to break down hard sugar blocks and serving three cups of tea is
a ritual imbued with profound symbolism, representing life, love, and death.

The first cup is said to be “as bitter as life,”
the second, “as sweet as love,”
and the third, “as gentle as death.”
This tradition reflects the very philosophy of the nomads who journey across the Sahara.

Within this culture, it is believed that “a person who can prepare tea beautifully,
with a fine froth, is a good person.”
The act of carefully pouring tea is seen as an expression of sincerity and hospitality.

I myself was once taught how to prepare tea by someone I became close to in the region.
They told me, “Since you can make delicious tea, you must be a good person,”.
