西アフリカ・マリ共和国のバンディアガラ断崖に暮らすドゴン族によって制作された木製ドアで、穀物倉庫や住居の入口に使われていた伝統的な扉です。単なる建具ではなく、家族や収穫を象徴的に守る意味を持つ存在として位置づけられてきました。

全面にはドゴン族特有の象徴表現が彫り込まれており、下部に表現されたワニのモチーフが印象的です。水や生命を象徴する存在として知られ、長寿や再生を意味する重要なモチーフとされています。さらに周囲にはジグザグ模様や幾何学文様が配され、生命力や収穫、秩序といった観念が造形として表現されています。

素材には現地の硬質な木材が使用され、長い年月を経て深みのあるダークブラウンへと変化しています。ヴィンテージ品につき、ひび・欠けがございますが、使い込まれたことで生まれた艶と、彫刻の凹凸による陰影が重なり、素朴でありながらも強い存在感を放ちます。

The Dogon people, who inhabit the Bandiagara Escarpment in Mali, West Africa, are known for their unique cosmology, animist beliefs, and deep reverence for their ancestors—traditions that continue to shape their way of life today.
Among the many wooden artifacts they create, traditional wooden doors like this one hold particularly profound meaning.

These doors were used not only as barriers for granaries or the entrances of homes, but also as symbolic protectors—invoking the blessings and protection of the spirits, ancestors, and forces of nature. They embody the Dogon worldview and serve as a medium of spiritual communication.

The surface is intricately carved with symbolic motifs specific to Dogon culture. One of the most striking features is the depiction of a crocodile near the lower part of the door.
In Dogon belief, the crocodile is revered as a sacred symbol of water, life, ancestral spirits, longevity, wisdom, and regeneration. It was often used in carvings to guard homes and villages.

Surrounding geometric patterns and zigzag lines symbolize vitality, abundance, and the cosmic order. Each motif is rich with meaning and represents a prayer or blessing for those who dwell within.
