ガボンのマホングウェ族による真鍮製の鐘。ヴィンテージ アフリカ アートとしても評価の高い一点ものです。独特の造形と深みのある金属の質感が、空間に静かな存在感を与えます。

ガボン東部からコンゴ共和国国境地帯にかけて暮らすマホングウェ族（コタ文化圏）によって作られた真鍮製の鐘です。祖先の遺骨を納めた容器とともに用いられる造形文化の中で生まれたもので、同地域に見られる金属装飾の特徴をよく表しています。

このような鐘は、儀礼の場で音を鳴らすための道具として使用され、像や仮面に取り付けられたり、手に持って鳴らされていたと考えられています。造形はシンプルでありながら力強く、金属のフォルムそのものが持つ存在感が際立ちます。

素材には真鍮が用いられており、使い込まれたことによる深みのある色合いと、経年による風合いが特徴です。表面に見られる細かな変化や質感が一点ごとの個性を生み出しており、軽く振ると澄んだ音色が響きます。

マホングウェ族を含むコタ文化圏の金属造形は、装飾性と抽象性を兼ね備えた表現として、現在ではアフリカンアートやプリミティブアートの分野でも高く評価されています。

そのまま置くだけでもオブジェとして成立し、棚上やデスク、ギャラリー空間などに取り入れることで、静かなアクセントとして機能します。金属素材のため、木製や布素材のインテリアとも相性が良く、空間に奥行きを与えます。

一点一点が手仕事によるもので、同じ形状のものは存在しない一点ものです。

本体には穴（首元付近の金属部分）や青錆が見られる箇所がございますが、経年による素材特有の変化として現れているものです。状態については写真をご確認のうえご検討ください。

Product Description
This bell, known as a “Reliquary Guardian Bell,” originates from the ancestral
spirit worship of the Mahongwe people, a minority group living in eastern Gabon and
near the Congo border.

The Mahongwe deeply honor their ancestors, placing great importance on
“Byeri” figures—reliquary statues set atop baskets containing ancestral bones.

These figures symbolize the spirits and play a central role in their rituals.

This bell was used in ceremonies to summon ancestral spirits, purify the space and
invoke protection. It was rung by hand or hung on statues and masks to produce sacred
sounds.

Crafted from warm, heavy brass, the bell’s worn surface and rich patina reflect
a long history of faith. The Mahongwe’s artistic style blends spiritual symbolism with
refined craftsmanship, earning recognition in the global art world.

Despite its modest size, this bell holds a strong presence, adding a serene, sacred
atmosphere to any interior.
