レガ族の社会には「ブワミ（Bwami）」という年齢階級制の秘密結社があり、道徳や人生の知恵を代々伝える重要な役割を担っています。
このような置物は単なる美術品ではなく、先祖から受け継がれた知恵や教訓を次世代に伝えるための“生きた教科書”のような存在でもあり、かつてブワミのメンバーは、これらの彫刻を通じて社会のルールや正しい生き方を学んでいたそうです。

目を閉じたような穏やかな表情は、内省や精神の目覚めを象徴し、胴体に施された穴は魂の通り道や心の中心を意味するといわれています。

体は抽象的なデザインが特徴で、幾何学的な形状に穴の開いた構造をしています。
これは、精神的な世界とのつながりを表現するためと考えられているそう。

This wooden ethnic art piece was carefully hand-carved by the Lega people, who live in the forest regions of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Though rich in spiritual meaning, it also carries a rustic charm and warmth that make it uniquely inviting.

In Lega society, there exists a secret, age-based institution known as Bwami, which plays a vital role in passing down moral values and life wisdom from generation to generation.
This figure is more than just a decorative object—it serves as a “living textbook,” used to communicate ancestral teachings and life lessons to future generations. It is said that members of Bwami once learned the rules of society and how to live righteously through sculptures like this.

The figure’s calm expression, with eyes gently closed, symbolizes introspection and spiritual awakening. The hole carved into the torso is believed to represent the soul’s passage or the spiritual center of the self. Each piece has its own unique form and expression, reflecting the individuality and warmth of handcrafted work.
