西アフリカ・マリ共和国に暮らすドゴン族が、長い年月をかけて受け継いできた伝統技術で作り上げた木箱。古くから穀物や、祭祀に使う道具などの貴重品を保管するために使われ、家族の歴史や信仰が刻まれた特別な存在です。

扉の中央には、人物像が彫られています。アンティーク品のため詳細は不明ですが、祖先や象徴的な存在を表している可能性があります。

箱の淵に施されたでこぼことした凹凸や三角形の模様は、祖先の象徴、生命のサイクル、保護や自然の要素などを表現していると考えられます。

こちらの扉は、一枚の板ではなく二枚の板を繋ぎ合わせ、その上に細い木材を組み合わせるという手の込んだ技法で作られています。

手作業で彫られた装飾は一つとして同じものがなく、個体ごとに異なる表情を持っています。また展示などによる経年の傷や汚れ、がたつき、欠けなどが見られ、欠けた部分は本体の前後に確認できます。これらは長い年月を経たヴィンテージ特有の風合いとして現れているものです。

堅木を使用し、時間の経過によって生まれた木の艶と質感がすでに現れており、素材の持つ深みが際立っています。

A traditional wooden chest made by the Dogon people of the Republic of Mali. Decorated with finely carved details, it is a one-of-a-kind piece valued both as African art and as a functional object with a strong presence.

This wooden chest was made using techniques passed down over generations by the Dogon people of Mali in West Africa. Traditionally, such chests were used to store grain, ritual objects, and other valuables, making them special objects connected to family history and belief.

A carved human figure appears at the centre of the door. As this is an antique piece, its precise meaning is unknown, but it may represent an ancestor or another symbolic presence.

The raised, irregular details and triangular motifs around the edge of the chest are thought to express ancestral references, cycles of life, protection, and elements of the natural world.

The door is not made from a single board. Two wooden panels are joined together, then fitted with slender pieces of wood in a carefully constructed technique that adds depth to the surface.

Each hand-carved detail is unique, giving this chest its own distinct character. Signs of age and use are visible, including scratches, surface marks, slight instability, and losses to the wood. Missing areas can be seen on both the front and back of the chest. These traces are part of the aged patina that comes with a vintage object.

Made from hardwood, the wood has developed a rich sheen and texture over time, bringing out the depth of the material.
