In southern Morocco, especially around the Atlas Mountains near Ouarzazate and along the Sahara Desert, high-quality soapstone is mined and skillfully hand-carved by local artisans into sculptures, vessels, and boxes like the one we are introducing here. This stone box is carefully shaped and polished from soapstone sourced from the fertile lands of Ouarzazate.

While it has a substantial weight, the surface feels warm to the touch, evoking a natural vitality. The texture and material convey the essence of the earth’s bounty, offering a presence that cannot be found in mass-produced items. The white geometric patterns carved on the box’s surface derive from traditional designs of the Amazigh (Berber) people who have long inhabited the Atlas Mountain region, including Ouarzazate.
