コンゴ民主共和国のレガ族による、多面木彫マスク。白く浮かぶ複数の顔と、全体を覆う同心円状の眼の文様が丸顔のフォルムに凝縮された一点です。棚やキャビネットに置くだけで、空間にひとつ、説明のつかない視線が生まれます。

この一点の魅力は、ただ不思議な顔をしたマスクでは終わらないこと。見る角度を変えるたび、白い顔料の下から赤みを帯びた木肌が現れ、円い目の連なりと小さな顔が入れ替わるように見えてきます。小さな彫刻でありながら、近づくほど情報量が増え、何度も見返したくなる存在です。

口元には、縫い目のようにも見える細かな刻みが残されています。これはレガの造形に見られる、身体に施す装飾的な刻印を思わせる表現です。円環状の眼の文様とともに、静かな顔に緊張感と、どこか人間離れした表情を与えています。

レガ族の造形には、顔や眼を重ね、見ることそのものを主題にしたような作品があります。本品もブワミ結社に関わるレガの多面マスクとしてご紹介します。平面的なマスクとは異なる、低く量感のある立体は、正面では顔の密度を、横からは削り出された木の厚みを際立たせます。

表面には白い顔料の擦れや剥がれ、木地の摩耗、色むら、細かな傷があります。それらを含めて、黒褐色、赤茶、白が重なるこの個体だけの表情となっています。

制作年代、詳細な型式、儀礼での使用歴は確認できていません。文化的背景を尊重しながら、レガの造形言語を感じられる一点物の木彫オブジェとしてご紹介します。

お手入れは、柔らかい乾いた布でやさしく埃を払ってください。水拭き、洗剤、研磨剤、直射日光、高温多湿は避けてください。

A cluster of faces that keeps changing as you look.

This multi-faced Lega mask from the Democratic Republic of the Congo gathers layered faces and concentric eye motifs into one low, rounded carved form. Placed on a shelf or cabinet, it introduces an arresting, unexplained gaze into an otherwise ordered room.

Its strength is in the density of its surface. Reddish-brown wood emerges beneath the worn white pigment, while circular eyes and small faces reveal themselves from different angles. It is a compact sculpture that becomes more compelling the closer you look.

Fine incisions at the mouth resemble stitches. They recall the decorative scarification marks found in Lega visual language, adding tension and an almost otherworldly expression to the face alongside the concentric eye motifs.

Lega art includes objects that layer faces and eyes, making the act of looking part of the form itself. This piece is presented as a multi-faced Lega mask associated with the Bwami tradition. Unlike a flat wall mask, it has a low sculptural volume: the front concentrates its faces and marks, while the profile reveals the weight of the carving.

Give it space of its own beside steel, black furniture, stone, glass, or a pale wall. Its complex silhouette becomes most powerful when it is allowed to stand alone.

Wear to the pigment, surface abrasion, tonal variation, and small marks are part of its character. The exact date, specific mask type, and ritual use of this individual piece have not been confirmed.
