A single black outline can change the rhythm of a shelf or console. Lean this carved face at a slight angle against a wall or stand, and its profile comes forward quietly. Against white walls, glass, or steel, its lines become crisp; beside books or wood, it settles into the setting while continuing to draw the eye.

Its oval outline is not perfectly symmetrical. Deeply carved eyes and a long nose running almost as one line from the forehead to the mouth give the face its distinct character. From a distance, it can appear less like a face and more like an abstract object composed of dark planes and lines.

What drew WOUET to this piece was its form before its explanation. Up close, the dark brown-black wood reveals subtle changes in tone and the marks left by carving. Seen from the front or at an angle, the expression shifts. Though compact in size, it gives a shelf, low plinth, or console a clear focal point when displayed with a little space around it.

This wooden work was acquired from a seller from Mali. Its place of production, cultural attribution, and original purpose have not been confirmed. While its form recalls West African face masks, it is presented here not through a fixed cultural label, but as a carved face made striking through an economy of line and form.

This piece has no hanging hardware and does not come with a stand. As the base is not flat, it cannot stand on its own. It is best displayed upright on a shelf, sideboard, bookcase, or plinth with a small object stand or easel. At approximately W14.1 × H18 × D4.7 cm, it is easy to incorporate alongside other objects or a vase without taking over the space.

Surface wear, small scratches, carved marks, and tonal variations in the wood are present. These irregularities are part of the individual character of this work.

To care for the piece, gently remove dust with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid water, cleaning products, direct sunlight, and high humidity. Display it on a stable stand in a place where it will not fall.
