コンゴ民主共和国のレガ族（Lega）による、木製のパスポートマスク。小型ながら彫刻的な造形を持つ、一点もののアフリカンアートです。

天然木から手彫りで仕上げられた木製マスクで、表面にはカオリン（白土）による顔料が施されています。マットな白と深みのある黒のコントラスト、立体的に伸びる鼻の造形が、小ぶりなサイズの中に強い造形性を生み出しています。

レガ族のこうした小型仮面は、一般に「パスポートマスク」と呼ばれています。レガ社会における精神的・教育的な組織「ブワミ（Bwami）」と関わる造形として知られ、白いカオリンや簡素化された顔の表現には、精神性や社会的な意味が込められてきたとされています。

左右には小さな穴があり、テグスなどを通して壁に掛けることができます。

大きなアフリカマスクとは異なり、限られたスペースにも取り入れやすいサイズ感です。白壁に単体で飾って陰影を楽しむほか、木や石、金属など異なる素材のオブジェと組み合わせても美しくまとまります。

A one-of-a-kind wooden passport mask by the Lega people of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Small in scale yet distinctly sculptural, this piece brings the quiet presence of African art into a contemporary interior.

Its softly pointed, heart-shaped face, narrow closed eyes and elongated nose create a refined, restrained form. The contrast between the pale kaolin surface and darker areas of the wood gives the mask a subtle depth that changes with the surrounding light.

Hand-carved from wood, the surface has been treated with kaolin, a white clay pigment traditionally associated with Lega works. Variations in the pigment, carving marks and surface texture give the piece a character that could only come from hand craftsmanship.

Small masks of this kind are commonly referred to as “passport masks.” They are associated with the Bwami society, an important social, educational and spiritual institution within Lega culture. The use of white kaolin and simplified facial forms is understood to carry symbolic and cultural significance within this tradition.

Small holes on either side allow the mask to be displayed on a wall using a fine cord or similar support.

Its compact scale makes it particularly easy to incorporate into a modern interior. Display it alone against a white wall to emphasize its silhouette and shadows, or combine it with objects in wood, stone or metal to create a restrained collection of contrasting materials.

Rather than filling a wall with decoration, a single small object can create a deliberate point of focus. Surrounded by negative space, the sculptural form of the mask becomes even more pronounced.

As a handcrafted object, variations in wood grain, carving, pigment and surface texture are an inherent part of the work. These individual characteristics make this a truly one-of-a-kind piece.
