This vintage wooden headrest originates from the Gurage cultural region of the central Ethiopian highlands.
Across many parts of Africa, headrests were traditionally used to support the head and neck during rest. Objects created for this practical purpose are now widely recognized within the fields of african art and tribal art for their strong sculptural presence and refined proportions.

This piece is carved from a single block of wood.
