大きく反り上がった湾曲形状の上部と、二本脚による軽やかな構造が特徴です。

This wooden headrest was crafted by the Somali people, who have traditionally lived across eastern Ethiopia and the surrounding dry regions of the Horn of Africa. Sourced directly in Ethiopia, this is a unique, one-of-a-kind piece.

The headrest is believed to have been used as an everyday object to support the neck during rest in floor-level living environments. It features a deeply curved top and a distinctive two-leg structure. Notably small and lightweight, the form reflects a design optimized for portability and daily use.

A dense hardwood suitable for arid climates was used for this piece. While the exact wood species cannot be identified, the material shows tight grain and durability. Variations in tone, darkened areas, and smooth surfaces are likely the result of long-term use, contact with hair and skin, and natural aging rather than later finishes.

Carved entirely from a single block of wood, the two-leg structure is not assembled but formed through continuous carving. This design choice likely reflects a practical solution—achieving stability while minimizing weight.
