Ethiopian Wooden Headrest

エチオピア中部から南部に広がる高原地帯に暮らすオロモ（Oromo）族によって用いられてきた木製ヘッドレストです。

このヘッドレストは、床に近い生活環境の中で就寝時に首元を支えるための生活具として使われてきた形と考えられます。
湾曲した上部は首の後ろに自然に沿うよう削り出され、一本木から成形された台座部分は安定感のある低重心のフォルムを持っています。
全体に無駄な装飾はなく、用途から導かれた形そのものが造形として成立しています。

樹種の特定は困難ですが、長年の使用に耐えうる密度の高い木で、表面には使い込まれることで生まれた艶や色の濃淡が見られます。
上部の黒ずみや滑らかな質感は、頭髪や手の油分、時間の経過によって自然に形成されたもので、後年の塗装ではない可能性が高いです。

制作はすべて手作業によるもので、わずかな左右差や刃跡が残っています。
これらは欠点ではなく、工業製品にはない個体差として、このヘッドレストが実際の暮らしの中で使われてきた痕跡を物語っています。

オロモ族は、農耕と牧畜を基盤とした生活を営み、家具や生活道具は持ち運びやすく、必要最小限の形にまとめられてきました。

Ethiopian Oromo Wooden Headrest｜Hand-Carved, One of a Kind

This wooden headrest originates from Ethiopia and is attributed to the Oromo people, who have traditionally lived across the central and southern highlands of the country. Sourced directly in Ethiopia, this is a one-of-a-kind piece, not a mass-produced object.

The headrest is believed to have been used as a practical everyday item, designed to support the neck during rest in floor-level living environments. The gently curved top is shaped to follow the natural line of the neck, while the solid, low-centered base provides stability when placed directly on the ground. The entire form is carved from a single block of wood, resulting in a continuous and sculptural silhouette.

A dense, locally available hardwood was used for this piece. While the exact wood species cannot be identified, the material shows durability and a tactile depth developed over time. The darker patina and smooth surface on the upper section are likely the result of long-term use, contact with hair and skin, and natural aging rather than applied finishes.

Carved entirely by hand, subtle asymmetries, tool marks, and surface variations remain visible. These characteristics are not imperfections but traces of the making process, highlighting the individuality of the object and its origin as a functional item embedded in daily life.

The Oromo people have historically combined agriculture and pastoralism, favoring objects that are portable, efficient, and minimal in form. This headrest reflects those values, resulting in an object where function dictates shape.
