アフリカ・コンゴ民主共和国東部に暮らすレガ族（Lega）は、深い森の中で独自の哲学と美意識を育んできた民族です。
この仮面は、レガ族の社会制度であるブワミ（Bwami）と呼ばれる階位儀式で使用されるもので、単なる装飾ではなく「道徳や知恵を象徴する教具」としての意味を持っています。
ブワミ社会では、人が成長する段階を精神的に表現し、人生の教訓や徳を語る際にこの仮面が登場します。白く塗られた顔はカオリン（白土）によるもので、魂の清らかさや祖先とのつながりを象徴し、静寂と精神性を宿した表情が印象的です。

長く真っ直ぐな鼻、小さな口、そしてわずかに開いた目。
装飾を抑えたこの造形には、レガ族の「内面の美」を重んじる思想が込められています。
上部の縦の彫り込み模様は、髪や冠を象徴し、社会的地位や霊的な力を表すデザイン。
木肌に残る赤褐色の顔料と白土のコントラストが、時を経た深みを感じさせ、愛くるしい表示状はアフリカンアートならではの神秘的な存在感を放ちます。

The Lega people of eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo have cultivated a unique philosophy and refined aesthetic within the depths of the forest.
This mask, used in the hierarchical initiation system known as Bwami, is not a mere ornament—it serves as a symbolic tool of morality and wisdom. Within Bwami society, masks like this one are used to illustrate the stages of human growth and to communicate lessons about virtue and life. The face, coated in white kaolin clay, represents purity of the soul and a deep connection to the ancestors, while its serene expression embodies tranquility and spiritual depth.

The long straight nose, small mouth, and slightly open eyes reflect the Lega’s philosophy of valuing inner beauty over outward display. The vertical carved lines on the upper part symbolize hair or a ceremonial crown, signifying status and spiritual power.
