Moroccan Tamgroute Pottery Mini Tea Cup Yunomi – Handmade North African Ceramic / Primitive African Art
A small yunomi tea cup made from traditional Tamgroute pottery in southern Morocco, North Africa. Crafted from mineral rich clay and fired in wood kilns, Tamgroute ceramics are a distinctive Moroccan craft known for their rustic character and are often appreciated within the context of African art and primitive art.
This small handmade cup can be used for Moroccan mint tea or Japanese tea, and also works beautifully as a small vase or decorative object in African interior decor or Moroccan style interiors.
Tamgroute is a small village in southern Morocco located at the gateway to the Sahara Desert.
Along with Fez and Safi it is known as one of the three major pottery centers of Morocco. For around 400 years Tamgroute pottery has been produced here using traditional techniques passed down through families.
This cup has a small size similar to a Japanese yunomi and a soft shape that fits naturally in the hand.
Its simple and warm form is shaped individually by artisans rather than machines.
The clay used comes from mineral rich deposits around Tamgroute.
Artisans shape the vessel using a foot powered wheel then dry it under the strong Sahara sun. It is slowly fired in a traditional wood kiln fueled by date palm wood.
These time honored methods give Tamgroute pottery its distinctive rustic texture and character.
The most striking feature is the deep olive green glaze.
Golden brown and orange tones flow naturally across the green surface creating a rich layered color.
This unique coloration comes from a glaze containing natural minerals such as copper combined with the effects of wood firing.
Inside the kiln the color changes depending on the flame and the position of the piece. Even when the same glaze and technique are used the results are never identical.
Variations in glaze flow differences in firing tones slight distortions and surface textures all appear naturally.
These individual characteristics are part of the charm of Tamgroute pottery and reflect the beauty of primitive art and traditional African folk craft.
It can be used for mint tea Japanese tea or coffee and also works well as a small vase or dessert cup.
Even when not in use simply placing it on a shelf or table gives it the presence of an African art object.
It pairs beautifully with modern interiors or Scandinavian furniture adding a primitive art accent and visual depth to the space.
It is also a wonderful piece for those who enjoy Moroccan decor or African interior objects.
Because Tamgroute pottery is entirely handmade each piece differs slightly in form color and glaze expression.
No two pieces are exactly the same making each one a truly one of a kind African craft.
Use it for everyday tea time.
Or display it as a small art piece that brings African decor into your living space.
It is an object that allows you to enjoy the pottery culture that has been passed down for centuries in a village at the edge of the Sahara.
