フェズ、サフィと並び、モロッコ三大陶器の産地として知られるこの地では、約400年にわたり、家族ごとに受け継がれる伝統的な手法で陶器がつくられています。

こちらのティーカップは、日本の湯呑みにも似た小ぶりなサイズ感で、手のひらにすっとなじむやわらかなフォルムが特徴です。
現地で採れるミネラル豊富な粘土を使い、足でろくろを回し、天日で乾燥させ、ナツメヤシの木を燃料にした薪窯でじっくりと焼き上げる。こうした手間ひまのかかる昔ながらの製法が、タムグルート陶器ならではの風合いを生み出しています。

最大の魅力は、その深く落ち着いた色合い。ベースとなるオリーブグリーンに、釉薬の流れによってオレンジが混ざったような赤がにじみ、黒やこげ茶の斑点がところどころに浮かび上がる——まるで土と火、自然のエネルギーが器の中で溶け合ったようなシックで趣深い色彩が広がります。

この独特の表情は、銅などの天然鉱物を含む秘伝の釉薬と、炎の加減や窯の位置によって偶然生まれる「窯変」によるもの。同じ釉薬と技法を使っても、まったく同じ仕上がりにはなりません。

表面のムラ、釉薬のかかり方の違い、焼き色の濃淡、わずかな歪みやおうとつ。

そうした一つひとつの“個体差”は、タムグルート陶器が持つ不完全の美であり、工業製品にはない手仕事の温かみを感じさせてくれます。

Tamegroute Pottery – Goblet-Style Mug
A one-of-a-kind piece born from the "beauty of imperfection."

In the small village of Tamegroute, located at the gateway to the Sahara Desert in southern Morocco, pottery-making has been handed down through generations for over 400 years.
Alongside Fez and Safi, Tamegroute is recognized as one of Morocco’s three major centers of traditional pottery.

What makes Tamegroute pottery truly special is its rich, earthy colors and expressive surfaces—each piece is utterly unique.
The clay used is rich in minerals and is dug from beneath the palm groves that surround the village. This local clay has distinctive properties that contribute to the pottery’s characteristic look and feel.

Following time-honored techniques, artisans use foot-powered wheels to shape each piece by hand, which is then sun-dried and fired in open-air kilns fueled by date palm wood.
During the firing process, the glaze melts and fuses unpredictably with the flame and heat, creating striking color transformations known as yohen (kiln variations).

The green glaze produces deep emerald and olive tones, often accented with black specks or reddish-pink hues depending on where the piece is placed in the kiln. These dramatic effects blend nature and craftsmanship in a way that transforms each mug into a piece of art.

This particular goblet-style mug—rare even among Tamegroute pottery—is defined by its rounded bowl and short stem.
It’s a versatile piece, perfect for warm beverages, herbal teas, or even as a wine cup.

Subtle uneven textures, glaze variations, and organic distortions are not flaws, but rather the result of local materials and traditional methods.
