アフリカ・マリ共和国のバンディアガラ断崖地帯に暮らすドゴン族（Dogon）によって制作された、象徴的な木彫の薬入れ（medicine container）です。
「wouet（ウート）」がアフリカ現地で一点ずつ直接買い付けたもので、熟練の職人によって丁寧に彫り出された唯一無二の一点です。

正面には幾何学的な文様が精緻に刻まれ、上部には四つの頭部を持つ人像が配されています。これは単なる装飾ではなく、ドゴン族の宇宙観に基づいた深い意味を持つ重要な意匠です。

ドゴン族の神話では、創造神ノンモ（Nommo）が世界の秩序を保つために東・西・南・北の四方向を定めたとされます。
この四つの頭はその四方を象徴し、薬入れに収められた薬草や秘薬をあらゆる方向から見守り、守護する存在と考えられてきました。
また「四」は完全性や安定、宇宙の均衡を示す聖なる数とされ、この作品には世界の調和を表す象徴的な意味が込められています。

表面には、三角形・格子・ジグザグなどの幾何学模様が刻まれています。
三角形は「生命の芽生え」や「大地の豊穣」、ジグザグは「水の流れ」や「再生」、格子模様は「祖先や社会とのつながり」を表します。
それぞれの文様には、癒し・保護・繁栄への祈りが込められ、薬入れという実用的な器を超えて、精神的な護符としての役割を担っていました。

この薬入れはもともとドゴン族のヒーラー（治療者）によって使われていたとされます。
内部には乾燥させた薬草や根、スパイス、天然の粉末などを保管し、治療や儀式の際に使用されました。
薬草を取り出す行為そのものが祈りと結びついており、箱は祖先の加護や自然の力を宿す神聖な器として、村の中央やヒーラーの家に大切に安置されていました。
そのため外部の人が触れることはほとんどなく、特別な地位を持つ人のみが扱うことを許されていました。

素材にはマリ産の硬質木材が使用され、すべて手作業で彫られています。
脚部を持つ構造は地面の湿気を避ける実用的な意味のほか、「大地と天をつなぐ存在」を象徴しています。
均整の取れた造形と文様の配置は美しく、芸術的にも非常に完成度の高い作品です。
