This wooden bird sculpture, called “Karao,” is hand-carved by the Senufo people of West Africa, particularly in Côte d'Ivoire, Mali, and Burkina Faso.

In Senufo culture, Karao refers to the African hornbill, believed to be the first bird created by the god of creation. It symbolizes fertility, life cycles, prosperity, and the protection of children, and is seen as a sacred being.

Karao figures play an important role in the rituals of the Poro secret society, guiding spirits of the dead and connecting the heavens and the earth. They also appear in initiation ceremonies, representing wisdom and moral education.
