こちらのKarao（カラオ）は、西アフリカのコートジボワールやマリ、ブルキナファソなどに
暮らすSenufo（セヌフォ）族によって、丁寧に一つひとつ手彫りされた伝統的なアートピースです。

マラケシュにあるイヴ・サンローラン博物館の玄関にも巨大なカラオが設置されており、
彼はセヌフォ族などのアフリカプリミティブアート（部族美術）に深い関心を持っていたそう。彼のデザインインスピレーションはこのようなアートから影響を受けていると言われているそうです。

セヌフォ族の文化では、「カラオ」はしばしばアフリカのサイチョウ（Hornbill）を指し、
創造神が最初に作った神聖な鳥として語られています。
その象徴性は非常に高く、豊穣・生命の循環・村の繁栄・子どもの守護など、あらゆる“恵み”とつながる存在とされています。

This wooden bird sculpture, called “Karao,” is hand-carved by the Senufo people of West Africa, particularly in Côte d'Ivoire, Mali, and Burkina Faso.

In Senufo culture, Karao refers to the African hornbill, believed to be the first bird created by the god of creation. It symbolizes fertility, life cycles, prosperity, and the protection of children, and is seen as a sacred being.

Karao figures play an important role in the rituals of the Poro secret society, guiding spirits of the dead and connecting the heavens and the earth. They also appear in initiation ceremonies, representing wisdom and moral education.

Its elongated beak pointing skyward and the elegant, abstract form express spiritual elevation and divine connection. The crown-like decoration and graceful silhouette reflect the Senufo’s artistic sensibility.
